Voy – Canyon

EP Review by Mark Bayross

This four track EP is the first release for over two years from guitar-based five piece Voy. The band were formally known as Cecil, which can’t really help much. The record was produced by Shellac bassist Bob Weston, who also gave the world Idlewild.

Opening track CANYON introduces Voy’s selling point: while the guitars may be thunderously tight, Ste (yes you read that right) Williams’ melodic vocals offer a unique and tantalising contrast. The overall effect is a bit like Fergal Sharkey fronting Deftones, or Placebo without Brian Molko’s transatlantic twang.

HEMERIJ adds some lyrical vitriol, while YOUR LOVING LOOP is a slow meander through fuzzy electronica and twinkling guitars. The EP finishes with HAPPY NEW FEAR – more guitars and more soaring vocals.

Another band to watch out for.
