Not all movies are meant to be mental stimulating, in fact some of them are supposed to be fun. Those movies are called comedies. Some are funnier than others and this is not one of them. Even though this is aimed at twelve year-old girls who find the Paris Hilton socialite life interesting and, dare I say it, might even think of this lifestyle as a way of life, they will enjoy this more than others.
Left with their deceased father’s cosmetic company, the Marchetta sisters Tanzie (Hilary Duff) and Ava (Haylie Duff) are more interested in hanging out with their friends in nightclubs than sitting around at boring boardroom meetings which they try to get out of. When an offer from cosmetic rival Fabiella (Anjelica Huston) is made that would net the Marchetta sisters $100 million each, their father’s business partner Tommy Katzenbach (Brent Spiner) convinces the girls to wait before they make their decision.
When a TV news reporter breaks a scandal that the Marchetta products can cause cancer and deformities, the company stock values plummet and the sister’s lives quickly head the same way. With their house burned down and only the clothes on their back, they seek out Inez (Maria Conchita Alonso), their housekeeper who puts them up in her apartment. With the general public baying for their blood, how can the sisters clear their name and get back their credit cards?
It is a bit worrying that the funniest line in the movie was one that was uttered from a TV soap opera that was playing in the background. Even some of the “jokes” are questionable as to whether they are appropriate for children but the movie sensors must think so, so what do I know. As for the cast, the Duff sisters do not seem to be acting which is quite worrying and the other established actors try making the most of a bad situation. It would seem that MATERIAL GIRLS was made as a starring vehicle for the Duff sisters and unfortunately for them and us, they are the most annoying things on screen for 100 minutes.
