Inside Deep Throat

Movie Review by Neils Hesse

Starring: Dennis Hopper (narrator), Gerard Damiano, Linda Lovelace, Harry Reems
Directors: Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato

Imagine a woman who is unfortunate enough to have her clitoris located in the back of her throat, impossible? Yes of course in real life it is but this was the premise of DEEP THROAT which followed the exploits of Linda Lovelace on her journey to find satisfaction. Costing a mere $25,000 it has raked in over $600 million, also it was the first pornographic film to have a general nationwide release in America. Still despite all this money it’s recently deceased star Linda Lovelace only got a $1,200 fee, the male lead almost went to prison for a very long time and the director didn’t get a cent of the profits.

This documentary film takes you behind the scenes of DEEP THROAT to show you what happened to the people involved with the film. It combines archival footage of old TV shows related to the film, old and recent interviews with the cast and crew and all under the amusing narration by Dennis Hopper.

Produced by Brian Grazer the film has a very cohesive, professional look to it. It explores the more seedy side of pornographic films and it also shows how liberal the Seventies really were. There is something for the old generation and also for the young generation as the film DEEP THROAT became a springboard for both liberalism and anti-liberalism. Groups such as Women Against Pornography were formed, but also a lot of people argued that they should have the right to watch what they want.

INSIDE DEEP THROAT is put together in quite an educational and amusing way, but whether or not it’s simply cashing in again on the DEEP THROAT phenomenon is another question.
