Movie Review by Nigel A. Messenger

Starring: Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Anna Faris, Carmen Electra

Director: Keenan Ivory Wayans

SCARY MOVIE is a straight forward spoof of the hit horror movie SCREAM. A killer in the SCREAM horror mask and black hooded cape is on the loose. A TV news crew with reporter Gail Hailstorm (Cheri Oteri) is on the case, there’s a dumb (this time pretend) cop, plus high school (college age) kids who are the targets. Most of the SCREAM elements are there plus a few other thrown in from other movies, in particular a very good scene emulating THE MATRIX.

The film is quite well made and the acting is good to very good. So what’s the catch? Well it’s just not funny! The idea is a good one, but the jokes are not.

The beginning is great! The gorgeous Carmen Electra takes the place of Drew Barrymore as she is taunted and pursued by the masked killer, every move being played for laughs of course. Carmen shows she can act, and in comedy too, which is the most difficult genre.

But then, flop, that’s it. There are some reasonably funny scenes scattered throughout the movie and the masked killer actually is very funny. Other than that though, you have to be a die-hard ‘Scream’ fan desperate for any kind of fix to get much out of it. What a shame, and I was really looking forward to this film. It could have be so much funnier……
