During the Civil War in Virginia, one of Martha Farnsworth’s (Nicole Kidman) students finds a deserted Union soldier, John McBurney (Collin Farrell), and brings him to the house. Martha, knowing she should turn him in to the confederate army, decides to heal his wounds before notifying them.
