Sometime in the future, filmmakers will refuse to touch sequels and some
people will applaud the decision and others will mourn the loss. Judging
by this follow-up, hopefully that day will be a long way off. AMERICAN PIE
2 is one of those rare cases where the sequel is funnier and better than
the original and there are not a lot of comedies that you can attach that
label to.
The movie starts with Jim (Jason Biggs) saying goodbye, in his own way, to
his latest girlfriend on the last day at college before the summer
vacation, but ends up embarrassing himself in front of his Dad (Eugene
Levy). Jim goes back home to his parent’s house and realises that over
the space of a year, just like his bedroom, he has changed little. He
compares notes with the others and all of them realise that they have not
bettered themselves since prom night. Ending up at a party organized by
Stifler (Seann William Scott) and probably wishing he hadn’t, the gang
rents a house by the lake and do what they do best, summer work and of
course, partying.
Jim is panicking about Nadia’s (Shannon Elizabeth) planned visit.
Thinking that he is not confident enough to perform for Nadia, Jim
approaches sex-crazed geek Michelle (Alyson Hanniagan) for some advice.
Stifler, in the meantime, gets angry every time Finch (Eddie Kaye) talks
about Stifler’s Mom (Jennifer Coolidge) and things do not get any better
as Finch is practicing the art of Tantric Sex in anticipation of their big
reunion. Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) is looking for more than just
friendship with Vicky (Tara Reid) and seems not to know half the time how
to feel.
While the characters seem to want their lives to move forward, they end up
trying too hard and are at the receiving end of embarrassing situations
with hilarious consequences. There are some scenes that are just
sidesplitting funny and you end up missing some of the follow up jokes
from it. When the quieter moments arrive, you end up being thankful for
the break. The funniest scenes here are the lesbian scene closely followed
by Jim’s porno tape scene and Stifler’s party at the start of the
movie. Yes, some of the humour is crude and tasteless and to be honest,
anything less would have been a disappointment from this lot.
Is it better than the first? Yes it is. Is it the funniest movie this
year? Quite possibly. Will they make a third one? We’ll have to wait and
see.
