Jean-Pierre Jeunet's enchanting comedy, follows in the footsteps of crowd-pleasers THE FULL MONTY and BILLY ELLIOT when it recently won the Standard Life Audience Award at this year's Edinburgh Film Festival (2001). Starring Audrey Tautou and Mathieu Kassovitz the film has been hailed as a return to delirious form for the director of DELICATESSEN. AMÉLIE has enjoyed phenomenal success in France. Little Amélie Poulain is educated at home by her over-protective parents after being incorrectly diagnosed with a heart condition. Having lost her mother to an unfortunate collision with a suicidal tourist from Quebec, Amélie grows up in a fantasy world before leaving the suburbs to become a waitress in a Parisian café. Although she is preoccupied with secretly improving the lives of everyone around her (lonely neighbours, love-starved co-workers, her widowed father's garden gnome) Amélie remains in a world apart. Her heart tells her that something is missing but she doesn't know what - or who - it is. One day, however, a bizarre photo album lands at her feet and Amélie sets out on a delightfully twisted path through the streets of Montmartre to meet its handsome, mysterious owner and her own destiny. AMÉLIE marks the first time director Jeunet has ventured outside the studio to shoot on location on the streets of Paris. In addition to his award-winning collaborations with Marc Caro on THE CITY OF LOST CHILDREN and DELICATESSEN, Jeunet was lured to Hollywood to direct 1997's ALIEN RESURRECTION starring Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder. |
