Synopsis

A BUNCH OF AMATEURS tells the story of ageing action hero Jefferson Steel (Burt Reynolds) desperate to revive his flagging career on the British stage and features a distinguished cast, including Academy Award® nominee Imelda Staunton, multi award-winning star of stage, screen and television Sir Derek Jacobi CBE and Samantha Bond.

Jefferson Steel is an ageing Hollywood action hero. He’s vain, insecure and out of work. Under pressure from his client, Jefferson’s incompetent LA agent is forced to go through his trash, in a final attempt to find Jefferson work, and stumbles upon the perfect role: a prestige run playing King Lear at Stratford-upon-Avon.

Jefferson believes he has landed the role of a lifetime; arriving in the UK to discover that instead of a leading role in a Royal Shakespeare Company production at Stratford-upon-Avon, he is booked to tread the boards with an amateur dramatic society in the sleepy English village Stratford St John, Suffolk. A clash of cultures with comic complications ensues in this funny and ultimately moving comedy.

In the presence of HM The Queen, at the 62nd Royal Film Performance, A BUNCH OF AMATEURS was chosen and screened in aid of The Cinema & Television Benevolent Fund (CTBF), the trade charity for the UK film and commercial television industries.
