Lawrence Newman (William H Macy) and his wife Gertrude (Laura Dern) live a quiet life but one day Lawrence starts to wear glasses and that minute change in his facial appearance ends up with them being mistakenly identified as Jews. At the receiving end of racial prejudice from their anti-Semitic neighbors they become friendly with a local Jewish immigrant and embark on a struggle for their daily survival and dignity. |
