Synopsis

Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), a knight who has fought for Christianity returns from his latest crusade but all he sees is suffering and hardship in the people around him. Questioning why God would allow such misery into people's lives he even speculates on God's existence.

But instead of meeting God, it's Death (Bengt Ekerot) who visits him and so begins his battle to survive, as in a game of chess, striving to find God when he sees only to prove the existence of Death.
