Anjali – Lazy Lagoon

Single Review by Mark Bayross

Ex-Voodoo Queen Anjali Bhatia’s four EPs to date were collected together on last year’s SHEER WITCHERY compilation (also reviewed on PHASE9), and hinted at a talent for studio trickery, but a certain thinness of ideas.

LAZY LAGOON precedes Anjali’s eponymous debut album proper, and it’s another slice of laid-back trip-hop, with breathy whispered vocals over minimalist beats. Fortunately, adding brass and strings into the equation has brought the track to life.

B-side STRAWBERRY MOUSE is also interesting, in a shimmering, Portishead-soundtrack-like way, however the lo-fi dreaminess of SHYLA is just a little too soporific.

Still, there are signs here that Anjali could have developed some solid ideas for her album.
