Baz – Believers

Single Review by Mark Bayross

Citing influences from John Lennon to Stevie Wonder and Kate Bush, and with a musical family background (her father was jazz musician Basil Gooden; her sister is rapper Monie Love), South London-based Baz certainly promises a lot.

She has christened a sound all of her own – “undersoul” – soulful pop with hip-hop beats – and has an album of emotional, autobiographical, uplifting grooves called PSYCHEDELIC LOVE in the pipeline.

In the meantime, we have this, her first single. Produced by Guy Sigsworth (Björk, Madonna, Seal), the song is given a variety of remix makeovers, including a funky one by her brother, Dave Angel.

BELIEVERS mixes a summery vibe with saccharine vocals, and is the sound of Baz setting her agenda from the outset; that perseverance, integrity and self-belief are the fuel that fires her soul.

Let’s see if she’s right.
