Birth – Gotten Bold

Album Review by Nigel A. Messenger

Birth are a difficult band to categorise, probably because “they” are not really a band at all. Birth is the brainchild of singer and multi-instrumentalist DL who prefers to use guest musicians rather than work inside the parameters of a permanent band line-up.

It’s not exactly a one-man band, according to their record company, there could well be future versions of Birth, the fluctuating line-ups each accommodating DL’s precise musical requirements. The one constant, of course will be DL.

The guests on GOTTEN BOLD include Blue Weaver on keyboards/organ, Steve Holley on drums and Will Fahey on saxophone. The album was produced by Lenny Franchi and DL, and all songs are written by DL.

The full tracklisting is:- LAST NIGHT, ONE TRUE WOMAN YOU ARE, SOLAIR, SWEET IDOL, HOPE, FOUND A WAY OUT, MOTHER MAMMY FRIEND, MENTALL, SURE TOOK MAGIC, ‘I’M A WITNESS, THIS IS LOVE, and MINE SWEET BABY.

This is generally music to relax to, not that it’s not good enough to get excited about, because it is good, it just doesn’t feel outstanding.

The best track on the album in my opinion is SOLAIR with its funky guitar sound, this should be the single release, although for now FOUND A WAY OUT will be released a couple of weeks before the album.
