Album Review by EDF

Sounding at times like a Beck side-project, Minneapolis trio, Iffy, take some of their inspiration from that little known Minneapolis genius Prince then mixes in some carefree lyrics.

The opening track DOUBLE DUTCH, one of the best tracks, is not really a fair indication to what the rest of the album is like, as it does disappoint. GEORGINA and ORIGINAL GREENLIGHT are both a little on the lazy side and CAN O COPE tries to up the ante by sounding like a party waiting to happen but unfortunately doesn’t. HI LIFE sounds like Bob Dylan taking a break from the serious side of life. SWEET STUFF is about a phone caller to a radio station expressing how much he loves his “Sugi Sugi” and easily sounds like something from the Prince stable. The rhythm guitar track also sneakily sounds like it’s been lifted from the Sister Sledge track THINKING OF YOU.

THE CITATION tries hard to be fun but sounds like a mish mash of sounds due to unnecessary over production. The same could also be said of DA BLINK as it goes for the quite verse, noisy chorus structure. Try not to think about The Beach Boys when you hear the chorus.

Most of the better tracks are near the end of the album. JOYRIDER is a fast funk tune and lifts the album from its lazy hazy rut it put itself to. LARVA RAE is a movie inspired tale about a trip down to the valley. SUPERBAD GIRL is a great funky dance floor instrumental and is easily one of the better tracks here. PROOF mixes parts of 70’s Blaxploitation with funky guitar and an orchestral sound while MASKMAN sounds unlike anything else from the rest of the album with a mournful sounding violin by Jessy Greene.

For the most part, Iffy seem to inject a lot of other influences into their songs without knowing how they themselves should sound and that’s one of the reasons why it doesn’t totally please from start to finish.
