Lowfinger – Go Go Me A Big Pop

Single Review by Mark Bayross

Lowfinger’s line-up may sound like the cast of a seventies cartoon TV series (Wally, Will, Sarah, Nobby and, er, Shaggy), but they come from a long line of pop chancers who are deadly serious about having fun.

Although they lack the street crim menace of the Happy Mondays or the drug-addled mania of the Butthole Surfers, there is something refreshingly sleazy about this single. Like schoolkids on crack, GO GO ME A BIG POP races out of the speakers, wah-wahs on overdrive and a big cheesy SFX grin plastered all over its face.

This is actually the fourth release from the London-based quintet, following on from the debut LOWFINGER EP and preceding singles “IDIOT RADAR and SCHOOL ROOM HEADRUSH. I guess the band wanted to stretch their legs a bit, because the two additional tracks veer way off the map.

DUCKPOND is a twisted countrified duet between brother Will and sister Sarah that evokes Primal Scream’s “Screamdelica” and Alabama 3, while “Boxer Shorts” sounds like Daft Punk fed though a mangle.

Lowfinger’s debut album is just around the corner and it’s called WHO’S GOT THE BISCUITS? Need I say more?
