Maximo Park – Graffiti

Single Review by Mark Bayross

What is going on in the North East at the moment? Is everyone listening to Gang Of Four and Joy Division and having “how skinny is my tie?” competitions? About 20 seconds after The Futureheads made it into the charts come Newcastle’s Maxïmo Park with a stormer of a follow up to their debut single APPLY SOME PRESSURE.

GRAFFITI comes racing out of the traps at you with everything – punked-up guitars, wailing organ, clattering beats and Paul Smith’s urgent and clever lyrics. “I’ll do graffiti if you’ll sing to me in French / what are we doing here if romance isn’t dead?” has all the hallmarks of a classic, defining couplet as this band go on to become huge.
