My Awesome Compilation – Actions

Album Review by Mark Bayross

Produced by Larry Hibbett from Hundred Reasons and feted by everyone from NME and Kerrang! to Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, My Awesome Compilation release their debut full length album after last year’s THE VIEW IS AMAZING EP.

At a brisk 38 minutes, ACTIONS is an upbeat slice of emo-flavoured rock, albeit without breaking any new ground. Songs like opener YOU NEED DISCIPLINE and recent single PUT UP A FIGHT make all the right moves but they are textbook pop-punk. SET TO GO stands out with some original-sounding spiky riffs, while obligatory slowie WHAT YOU DO benefits from a pretty piano line and oodles of melody.

One thing that does come across is the abundance of positive messages throughout the album – lots of “I believe in you”-type sentiment – which makes for a welcome change from the standard “my girlfriend’s left me and I’m going to slit my wrists” themes that have become a bit of a genre cliché.

Definitely worth a listen if you respond well to an encouraging kick up the behind from time to time.
