Rookie – When It All Comes Down

Album Review by EDF

One of the things I love about reviewing independent artists is that at times I get to hear music which is better than the usual fair you hear and see on commercial TV and radio stations. Rookie, a four piece from Columbus, Ohio, US call themselves a hard-hitting pop / punk / rock group. I for one will not argue their description but what we have is a band who can both write and perform decent tunes.

From the catchy opening track SICK OF ME to the rocking LONG LONELY SUNDAY, which I can relate to as this review was composed on Sunday, there is a sense that they have something to prove here. Influenced by the likes of The Beatles, the subject matters become identifiable due to singer/guitarist Doug Kreitzer and guitarist/vocals Tommy Cappel’s lyrics. There is a rawness to Rookie which is evident on SAME OLD SONG and SOMETIMES I’M WRONG but this can only prove that what these guys record for a CD can only translate to an energetic live gig.
