Six By Seven – New Year

Single Review by Mark Bayross

NEW YEAR is taken from Six By Seven’s critically acclaimed second album, THE CLOSER YOU GET, and serves as an effective introduction to any late-comers to the band. NEW YEAR is a blast of corrosive guitars and taut melody, a reminder of days of old when British indie music was more than just whiny losers trying to sound like the Beatles.

It’s backed by the Smashing Pumpkins-esque SLEEP, a sonambulant strum that sounds both understated and epic in that Billy Corgan kinda way, and the instrumental STONED IN HAWAII, whose drums and guitars steadily build into a torrent of rhythm and feedback, before winding down like a broken jet engine.

All in all, superb.
