Alabama 3 – Too Sick To Pray

Single Review by Mark Bayross

The Brixton-based collective Alabama 3 is one of those unique bands which defies lazy categorisation, and for that we should be thankful. Peddling gospel-tinged country rock, but laced with an undercurrent of trip-hop menace, Alabama 3 are the sound of South London via Nashville.

If you are one of the 300 squillion people who has watched the hit TV series THE SOPRANOS, then you will have heard Alabama 3’s WOKE UP THIS MORNING. Chances are, if you are one of the, oh, 300 thousand people who listen to the radio, you will have heard TOO SICK TO PRAY by now too.

Funky and tuneful, with a slinky vibe, the title track sounds a bit like Primal Scream’s “Screamadelica” with Larry Love as Satan himself on vocals. B-sides IF I SHOULD DIE TONIGHT and SHAKE A TAILFEATHER veer a bit more towards skewed goth-country à la Tom Waits.

Catchy, classy and cool.
