Hot Snakes – Peel Sessions

EP Review by Mark Bayross

Something of a bittersweet record as this was sadly the last Session transmitted before John Peel’s death. Featuring the six-string attack of former Rocket From The Crypt man John Reis, this is stripped down, raw and vital punk rock, just the sort of thing you know Peel loved.

This EP blazes past in a quartet consisting of BRAINTRUST and THIS MYSTIC DECADE from third album AUDIT IN PROGRESS and NO HANDS and the title track from debut AUTOMATIC MIDNIGHT, averaging around two minutes each.

While the muddy production probably adds to the DIY feel, there is a sameiness throughout the EP that only BRAINTRUST really punctures, a song which is coming out as a single this summer anyway. Still, the spirit of John Peel lives on and that can only be a force for good these days.
